1989 Porsche 959 Sport – 1 of Just 29 Produced

One of 11 in Grand Prix White • All‑Original • Factory Stage II • Exceptional Provenance

The Porsche 959 Sport (959S) represents the most focused, most exclusive, and most potent evolution of Porsche’s revolutionary Group B–inspired supercar. While the standard 959 is already a landmark in engineering and design, the 959 Sport elevates the formula with increased power, significant weight reduction, simplified suspension, and a purist specification built for maximum performance.

With only 29 examples produced between 1987–1988, the 959 Sport remains one of Porsche’s rarest production models—and a cornerstone of any world‑class collection.

Sport Overview

The 959 Sport was engineered as the ultimate, driver‑centric expression of Porsche’s cutting‑edge 959 platform. Compared to the Komfort model, the Sport features:

Performance Enhancements

• 2.85L sequential twin‑turbo flat‑six, upgraded to 508–515 hp (vs. 444 hp Komfort)

• 0–62 mph in approx. 3.7 seconds

• Top speed exceeding 210 mph

Increased boost pressure and performance‑oriented engine mapping

Lightweight Specification

Approximately 100 kg (220 lbs) lighter than the standard model through deletion of:

A/C

Rear seats

Central locking

Power windows

Chassis & Handling

Straightforward coil‑over suspension replaces the complex hydraulic ride-height system of the Komfort model

Lighter, more direct, and significantly sharper on the road or track

Interior & Exterior

Sport seats with harness provisions

“S” steering wheel

Minimalist cabin with cloth interior instead of leather.

Standard single passenger‑side mirror on some examples

Born from Porsche’s Group B program, the 959 Sport is the purist, uncompromised version of the company’s first true supercar—a technological milestone that paved the way for future AWD performance icons.

Exceptional Maintenance History

Just 29,000 km (~18,000 miles) from New

This example—959 Sport chassis #06—is among the finest, most original 959S models in existence. Its condition, provenance, and documented factory upgrades place it in the top tier of surviving examples.

Provenance – Five Owners from New

• 1989 – Delivered new to Willi Marewski, prominent Frankfurt‑based collector of rare cars and motorcycles

• 2007 – Sold to Sigurd Lutz Legner (Hohendubrau, Germany)

• Subsequently sold to Rolf Haunt of Switzerland (owned for one year)

• Later acquired by U.S. collector Michael Kelter, who consigned it to auction

• 2015 – Purchased by current owner at Gooding & Company’s Scottsdale sale

Today, the car remains a highly original, carefully preserved example representing exceptional long‑term stewardship.

Factory Stage II Upgrade (2002)

In June 2002, under the original owner’s care, this 959 Sport was sent to Porsche’s customer center to receive the coveted Stage II factory upgrade, developed by Elmar Willrett—the legendary engineer behind the turbocharging systems of the 934, 935, and 961 programs.

The upgrade included:

Improved turbochargers

Enhanced intercoolers

• 961‑spec camshafts

ECU and fuel‑injection recalibration

Total power increased to 540 hp, with dramatically improved throttle response and reduced turbo lag. Only three 959 Sport examples are believed to have received this factory Stage II specification—making this one of the most desirable configurations ever offered.

Condition & Service History

This 959 Sport remains all‑original and unrestored, presenting beautifully throughout. Its mechanical condition is exceptional thanks to extensive maintenance history, including:

• $55,000 Porsche Classic service (2011)

• $59,000 Engine out service performed by Road Scholars (2021)

Continuous documented care from new

The car is accompanied by books, tools, service records, and documentation attesting to its provenance and authenticity.

Summary

This 1989 Porsche 959 Sport represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most exclusive and technologically significant supercars ever produced. As 1 of only 29, 1 of 11 in Grand Prix White, and one of very few upgraded to Porsche’s Stage II specification, it stands as a trophy‑level example of Porsche’s pioneering engineering.

With just five owners, 29,000 km, and a history of meticulous maintenance, chassis #06 is a definitive 959 Sport—preserved, documented, and ready for its next steward.
