1961 Porsche 356B Super 90 GT – Chassis 115381
From its earliest days, Porsche’s motorsport success was driven by both factory and privateer efforts. In response to growing demand for dual-purpose road and race cars, Porsche developed high-performance variants of the 356, culminating in the rare 356B Super 90 GT.
Only 14 Super 90 GTs were produced—five in 1960 and nine in 1961—all built to Carrera GT specification but fitted with the torquey and reliable pushrod Super 90 engine. These cars featured lightweight aluminum panels, plexiglass windows, GT bucket seats, RSK-type brakes, and minimal soundproofing, resulting in a weight reduction of up to 200 pounds compared to standard coupes.
Chassis 115381 was delivered in Ruby Red with a black interior and mouse grey corduroy inserts. It was acquired by Swedish rally driver Harry Bengtsson in 1961 and campaigned successfully across Europe, contributing to Hans-Joachim Walter’s 1961 European Rally Championship win. Bengtsson continued to race the car through 1962, securing multiple podiums including a class win and second overall at the Rally to the Midnight Sun.
Recently reunited with its original Type 616/7 engine (#802476), this Super 90 GT is one of the few known examples with its matching engine. Accompanied by extensive documentation, period photos, and memorabilia, chassis 115381 represents one of the finest surviving examples of Porsche’s rarest 356 variant.
