1959 Porsche‑Diesel Junior 108 S “Vineyard”

Among the more than 125,000 Porsche‑Diesel tractors produced between 1956 and 1963, few are as rare, specialized, and desirable as the Junior 108 S “Vineyard.” Purpose‑built for the narrow confines of Europe’s most prestigious vineyards and orchards, the 108 S stands today as one of the most coveted Porsche‑Diesel variants—especially in this remarkably correct and restored example.

Produced in exceptionally low numbers—with just over 400 “Vineyard” models built—and believed to number only 12 examples imported into the United States during 1959 and 1960, the Junior 108 S was engineered to perform where traditional farm tractors simply could not. Its narrow‑gauge configuration allowed it to slip effortlessly between tightly spaced vines in regions such as the Mosel, Rheingau, and Rheinhessen, earning it its enduring nickname.

This Porsche‑Diesel Junior 108 S Vineyard, serial number 16329, was originally delivered new in 1959 to Isakson Steel, a tractor dealer located in Seattle, Washington. It remained with its original owning family and was used on their farm in Bremerton, Washington, until it was rediscovered in 2004 by renowned Porsche‑Diesel tractor enthusiast and restorer Steve Young.

Recognizing the historical significance and rarity of the model, Mr. Young undertook a comprehensive restoration—his first Porsche‑Diesel project—using original parts throughout. The restoration was completed in 2013, returning the tractor to correct specification while preserving its authenticity and character.

Power comes from Porsche’s innovative air‑cooled, single‑cylinder 822‑cc diesel engine, equipped with Bosch diesel injection. Originally rated at 11 horsepower, engineering revisions by 1959 boosted output to as much as 14–15 horsepower, delivered through a six‑speed manual transmission with two reverse gears. As with all Porsche‑Diesel tractors, the design emphasized durability, efficiency, and modular engineering—an approach so advanced that the same basic engine architecture was offered in two‑, three‑, and four‑cylinder configurations.

But the Junior 108 S is about far more than horsepower alone. One of its signature features is its adjustable track width, which could be set as narrow as 25 inches or widened to approximately 45 inches, making it uniquely adaptable to specialized agricultural use. Adding to its appeal is its striking Art Deco‑inspired bodywork, a hallmark of Porsche‑Diesel design that remains visually compelling more than six decades later.

Finished in traditional Porsche‑Diesel red with off‑white steel wheels, it rides on correct‑size 16‑inch front and 24‑inch rear wheels.

Rare, historically significant, and undeniably charismatic, the Junior 108 S “Vineyard” represents a fascinating chapter in Porsche’s engineering legacy and stands as a centerpiece‑worthy addition to any serious collection
