The Porsche factory launched its first definitive race model 550 Rennsport Spyder design in 1953. Only 90 examples were made; each with lightweight aluminum bodywork and a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Later production Spyder’s tipped the scales at 1,301lbs.  The engine was designated as the Typ 547, and featured four overhead camshafts. With an aluminium crankcase, the 1498cc flat-4 engine produced 110bhp at 7,800rpm. The Spyder was a competitive package and would later develop the reputation on race tracks around the world as a “giant killer.”

This particular example bears chassis number 550-0090 and is the most original one in the world, with just over 19,000 miles on the odometer. In fact, it won the FIVA award for originality at Pebble Beach back in 2010 and wowed the judges with its authentic details.

Road Scholars had the privilege in assisting with the acquisition of 550-0090 and then performed a total mechanical service after years of inactivity. The all encompassing mechanical service was carried out with a total focus on preservation. The 550-0090 is now ready to be driven and will be enjoyed in its wonderful new home.
